Corlys Velaryon Kingsguard
Not to be confused with Corlys Velaryon.
Corlys Velaryon was the first Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, the order of seven white swords that Aegon I Targaryen created to protect the throne of Westeros. His name would live on another way too: generations later, a lord of his own house — the Sea Snake — would carry it in his honor.
Chapter 1
The first white cloak
From 10 ACBooks only
Corlys Velaryon was among the knights who swore the first vows of the Kingsguard when Aegon I Targaryen created the order, in the year 10 after the Conquest. Among those founding brothers, it was he who received command: the first Lord Commander the order ever had.
Little survives of his service beyond the reputation it left behind: a swordsman fast and strong, sharp-eyed in a fight, and a man given wholly to the king he guarded. He is said to have kept that honor to the end of his days, though nothing tells when or how that end came.
Chapter 2
The name that endured
Books only
Centuries after his death, a lord of House Velaryon famed across Westeros for his voyages and known as the Sea Snake was named Corlys in honor of this first Lord Commander, his own great-great-grandfather.
