Rhogar Velaryon

His cousin Ser Vaemond Velaryon claimed Driftmark for himself and called Lucerys, the grandson Lord Corlys had chosen as his heir, a bastard. The accusation cost him his head: Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Lucerys's mother, demanded his execution.

Rhogar and his brothers learned nothing from it. They brought the same claim before an ailing Viserys I and made the same mistake again, questioning the blood of Rhaenyra's children. The king spared their lives, but not their tongues: he had them cut out for their insolence.

The resentment over their mutilation outweighed any loyalty of blood. When the Dance of the Dragons broke out, Rhogar and his brothers sided with Aegon II, even though the rest of the house had already declared for Rhaenyra and the Blacks.

The war was hard on them: of all his brothers, only he and Malentine lived to see it end.

When Alyn Velaryon inherited the title of Lord of the Tides, not all the family accepted it. Malentine and Rhogar, along with other cousins, took their complaint to the council at King's Landing; Vaemond's sons, Daemion and Daeron, accepted the ruling against them. The two brothers without tongues did not.

"Lacking tongues to make their appeal, they chose to argue with swords instead," Mushroom recounts. The plot to kill their young lord failed: the garrison on the island did not betray the memory of Lord Corlys or the heir he had chosen. Malentine died in the attempt; Rhogar was captured.

Condemned to death, he escaped the block by taking the black and swearing his oath to the Night's Watch.
