Blockade of Blackwater Bay
bloqueo de la bahía del Aguasnegras
The Blockade of Blackwater Bay was the naval maneuver by which House Velaryon, loyal to Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, sealed off the sea approach to King's Landing during the Dance of the Dragons. Led by Corlys Velaryon, the black fleet strangled the capital's trade and pushed the Greens to look for help beyond Westeros.
The move turned the sea into another front of the succession war and drove the Greens to strike a deal with the Triarchy of the Three Daughters, whose fleet would eventually meet the Velaryon ships in the waters of the Gullet.
Chapter 1
The sealed sea
From 129 ACBooks and show
After Aegon II's coronation tipped the realm into war, Prince Daemon fought his campaign on land, seizing Harrenhal and gathering most of the black forces at Dragonstone. At sea, Corlys Velaryon answered by sealing off the bay of Blackwater with his fleet.
With the sea lane cut, King's Landing lost much of its trade, a blow that struck a regime already unsettled by Viserys's recent death and the rift between Blacks and Greens.
Chapter 2
The alliance that broke it
Books only
The economic strangling pushed Hand of the King Otto Hightower to seek help outside Westeros, striking a naval pact with the Triarchy of the Three Daughters. Its fleet sailed from the Stepstones toward the Gullet, where Prince Jacaerys waited with riders drawn from the dragonseeds.
The clash there became the bloodiest the war's navies ever fought: the Essosi allies lost nearly all their ships, the Velaryon fleet saw much of its own burn, and Driftmark went up in flames. Even so, the hold on Blackwater Bay was finally broken.
