Monford Velaryon

As a sworn lord of House Baratheon of Dragonstone, Monford lends his ships to Stannis Baratheon's bid for the throne. His support comes with conditions: he warns he will pull his forces out if the attack does not come soon, making plain that his patience for the cause has limits. He is present when Melisandre sets fire to the sept of Dragonstone.

Monford pushes for Stannis to sail straight to King's Landing and challenge Joffrey Baratheon, but Stannis chooses instead to move against his brother Renly. During the siege of Storm's End, Stannis comes to suspect that Lord Velaryon means to storm the castle on his own.

At the Battle of the Blackwater, wildfire catches Lord Velaryon's ship and sets it ablaze. Aurane Waters, his bastard half-brother, yields to Joffrey Baratheon once the fighting ends.

Later, in A Storm of Swords, Lord Alester Florent reports the grim fate Monford met in that battle. His son Monterys succeeds him as head of House Velaryon.

Accounts describe him as a handsome man with long fair hair, fond of sea-green silks pinned with a white-gold seahorse brooch. He is an outspoken supporter of aggressive tactics in war. Ser Davos Seaworth, for his part, doubts that Lord Velaryon would ever have trusted him.
