Gareth Tyrell

Gareth Tyrell was the second son of Ser Alester Tyrell and, unlike his older brother, favored books over the sword. He served the Gardeners as Great Steward of Highgarden, a post his family would go on to hold for generations.

Chapter 1

The son who chose books

Books only

Gareth was the second son of Ser Alester Tyrell, and his temperament set him apart from his older brother early on. While his brother was bound for knighthood, Gareth was drawn to books instead, and he was never anointed a knight. He chose instead to serve the Gardeners, lords of Highgarden, as royal steward.

Chapter 2

A post that became a heritage

Books only

Together with his son Leo, Gareth carried out the duties of Great Steward so well that the Gardeners decided to make the post hereditary within his family. What had begun as the occupation of a second son with no taste for the sword became the foundation on which the Tyrells would build their standing at Highgarden.
