Urrigon Greyjoy
Urrigon Greyjoy, called Urri, was one of Lord Quellon Greyjoy's sons and a brother to Balon and Aeron Greyjoy. He died as a child, and his name barely appears outside the story of that death.
What happened to Urrigon left its mark on his family: the broken bond with Aeron and the Iron Islands' distrust of outland maesters both trace back, in part, to this episode.
Chapter 1
The finger dance
From 269 ACBooks only
Urrigon was the fourth child Lord Quellon Greyjoy had with his second wife, Lady Sunderly. Quellon already had three sons from an earlier marriage, and he and Sunderly would go on to have three more.
As a boy, Urrigon was close to his younger brother Aeron. They used to play a game called the finger dance, and in one round Aeron threw an axe that sliced off part of Urrigon's hand.
Chapter 2
Lady Piper's maester
283 ACBooks only
Quellon married again, this time a woman of House Piper, and she brought an outland maester to Pyke. The maester insisted on sewing Urrigon's severed fingers back on instead of treating him the old ironborn way, with fire and seawater. The wound turned infected, and by the time his arm was finally amputated it was too late: Urrigon died at fourteen.
Quellon died soon after at sea, and Balon Greyjoy returned to Pyke as the new Lord of the Iron Islands. Balon had the maester's fingers cut off and forced Lady Piper to sew them back on; the maester died raving.
