Vickon Greyjoy

The death of Harren the Black at Harrenhal broke apart House Hoare's dominion at a stroke. The lands he had ruled along the Trident passed to House Tully, while on the Iron Islands no one held clear authority to take the Seastone Chair.

Several captains and lesser lords claimed the right to rule, and for a time the isles went without a lord paramount all could agree on.

The dispute ended when Aegon Targaryen landed on the islands and brought them under his war of conquest. Rather than impose a ruler from outside, he let the noble houses who had survived the fighting choose their own lord.

The choice fell on Vickon Greyjoy, Lord Reaper of Pyke and a captain of renown, who also traced his line back to the Grey King. He thus became the first Lord Paramount of the Iron Islands, enthroned upon the Seastone Chair.

Vickon did not end the ironborn custom of reaving, but he pushed it far from the coasts of Westeros, so as to give the Targaryens no cause to step into the islands' affairs.

He also let septons and septas return to the archipelago, something unthinkable during the war, since Aegon had embraced the Faith of the Seven. The move angered many ironborn and the priests of the Drowned God alike, but Vickon held firm, holding that only a fool would defy Aegon the Conqueror's will.

Vickon Greyjoy died in the year 33 after the Conquest. His son Goren succeeded him upon the Seastone Chair.
