Walda Frey is the daughter of Edwyn Frey and Janyce Hunter, born into the sprawling house that rules the Twins, the fortified crossing over the Trident.
Her place in the family's line of succession, and even the certainty of who her father truly is, are matters her own relatives discuss among themselves.

An uncomfortable rumor has long run through the Twins: that Janyce Hunter, Walda's mother, once had an affair with Black Walder. The one telling it this way is Merrett Frey, a distant relative of the family.
The story is well known enough among her own kin to cast doubt on who Walda's father truly is.
