Lothar Frey

Walder Frey's twelfth son — and the first born of his marriage to Alyssa Blackwood, the sixth of Lord Walder's wives — Lothar's birth year isn't fixed with certainty in the sources. A difficult birth left him with a twisted leg, the injury behind his nickname, "the Limping Lord". He's described as heavyset, with eyes set close together and a pointed beard, reputed sharp-witted and well-mannered despite the limp.

Married to Leonella Lefford, with whom he has four daughters — Tysane, Walda, Emberlei and Leana — Lothar has spent more than ten years running the household at the Twins as his father's steward, a position of trust in a house where trust runs thin.

When House Frey and House Stark try to patch up their broken alliance, Walder sends Lothar to Riverrun with the Twins' answer. He's the one who sets the price of forgiveness: to wipe out the insult, Edmure Tully must marry a Frey bride of Lord Walder's own choosing. Lothar returns with King Robb Stark's agreement, and when Robb later arrives at the Twins to make his apologies in person, Lothar is among those who greet him with every courtesy.

That courtesy hid something else. Merrett Frey would later say his brother is one of the more dangerous Freys around, and with good reason: Lothar helped Roose Bolton work out much of the plan behind the slaughter unleashed that night at the Twins, and it was his idea to use a particular song as the signal to start the killing.
