Aemma Arryn, wife of King Viserys I Targaryen, died while giving birth to their son Baelon. The newborn barely outlived her, dying the following day.
Her death also ended the king's last hope of a direct male heir, leaving him a widower.

After the two deaths, Viserys I named his only surviving daughter, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, as heir to the Iron Throne.
Thousands of lords and knights across the realm swore their loyalty to the princess as a direct result of that appointment.
