In the year 120 after the Conquest, Prince Daemon Targaryen married his own niece, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. The court of the Seven Kingdoms took the news as a scandal: the two were close kin, there was a wide gap in their ages, and both had only just lost their previous partners.
The marriage is remembered as one of the events that gave the year 120 its name, the Red Spring, a year the Targaryen dynasty would not forget.
Marriage of Daemon and Rhaenyra
Months before the wedding, both Daemon and Rhaenyra had lost their spouses. Rhaenyra's husband, Laenor Velaryon, was murdered by Qarl Correy. Daemon's wife, Laena Velaryon, died three days after giving birth; the son she had borne him did not live even an hour.
With that double mourning still fresh, Daemon and Rhaenyra married each other in 120 AC. The news spread through the Seven Kingdoms as a scandal: they were uncle and niece, there was a wide age gap between them, and they had barely buried their previous spouses.
