Genna Frey

Tytos Lannister wanted everyone to love him, and Walder Frey, Lord of the Crossing, knew how to use that weakness: he talked Tytos into betrothing his only daughter to one of his own many sons. Genna was seven years old when she was promised to Emmon Frey, Walder's second son.

The betrothal was announced at a feast at Casterly Rock, with half the western lords in attendance. Tywin was the only one who spoke against it; the match went ahead regardless, and though Genna never came to care much for Emmon, she loved her brother all the more for having stood up for her.

Genna and Emmon settled at Casterly Rock rather than moving to the Freys' lands. She was never fully happy with her husband, but she gave him four children, Cleos, Lyonel, Tion, and Walder, and no one, not even Emmon, dares suggest they aren't his.

She was there when Cersei and Jaime were born, and when Joanna died bringing Tyrion into the world, it was Genna who stepped in for the three of them. She was forever tugging at Jaime's ear, half affection, half scolding.

In 276 AC, Tywin held a tournament in the west to celebrate the birth of Prince Viserys Targaryen. Genna let Cersei in on the plan: at the closing feast, her betrothal to the crown prince, Rhaegar, would be announced — a match Tywin had wanted for years.

No announcement came, and King Aerys left the west without explanation. When Cersei asked what had happened, Genna admitted that the king had turned down her father's proposal, and promised her that Tywin would find her a better husband than the prince.

The war cost Genna two of her sons. Tion, the youngest, was killed by Rickard Karstark and his men even though he was an unarmed prisoner.

Cleos, her eldest, died soon after at the hands of outlaws.

When the crown stripped the Tullys of their lands, it handed Riverrun to Genna and Emmon. Brynden Tully still held the castle and refused to yield it, so it had to be put under siege. Given the choice, Genna would have preferred Darry: poorer, but with no male heirs left to come asking for it back, unlike the Tullys.

During the siege she urged Jaime to execute Edmure Tully, whom she saw as a threat to their new claim, along with the child Edmure's wife had not yet borne. When Jaime, with Tywin dead, told her he felt unprotected, Genna answered plainly: "the true son of Tywin is Tyrion, not you. I told your father so once, and he did not speak to me for half a year."
