Darnold Arryn
Darnold Arryn held the reins of House Arryn in the Vale for a good part of Jaehaerys I Targaryen's reign, carrying the titles of Defender of the Vale and Warden of the East alongside that of Lord of the Eyrie.
His rule falls within the dynasty's early years, when those offices defined who answered for the region's security.
Chapter 1
Defender of the Vale
Books only
As head of House Arryn, Darnold inherited rule over the whole Vale from the Eyrie, the stronghold crowning the Mountains of the Moon. Alongside the titles of Defender of the Vale and Warden of the East came the duty of watching that mountainous border, land of wildling clans locked in constant conflict with the Vale's lords.
His time at the head of the house coincided with the reign of Jaehaerys I Targaryen, the king then seated on the Iron Throne.
Chapter 2
Death in the Mountains of the Moon
54 ACBooks only
In 54 AC, Darnold rode out after a band of mountain raiders together with his brother, Ser Rymond Arryn. The chase carried them too far: both fell there, at the hands of the very clans they were hunting.
The lordship of the Eyrie then passed to a ten-year-old boy, Rodrik, Ser Rymond's son, who inherited the seat sooner than anyone could have expected.
