Roland II Arryn

Roland II inherited the throne of Mountain and Vale as great-grandson of Roland I, the king who had started raising the Eyrie. Finishing that work held no appeal for him: the chronicles remember a man given over to war and to whores.

The cost of construction was already high, and Roland needed that money for something else: a military campaign in the Riverlands. Work on the Eyrie stopped for nearly four years while he pursued that war.

The campaign brought him a few minor victories against lesser lords, but it ended with him facing Tristifer IV Mudd, the Hammer of Justice, who dealt him a crushing defeat.

Roland fled with one of his allies. That same ally betrayed him and handed him back to Tristifer in chains.

Four years after that surrender, the Hammer of Justice had Roland II beheaded at Old Stones.

Few mourned him.
