Retaking of Rook's Rest

Rook's Rest had changed hands shortly before, when Aemond Targaryen and Ser Criston Cole seized the castle following the death of Rhaenys Targaryen and her dragon Meleys. They beheaded its lord and put the garrison defending it to the sword.

Sunfyre, King Aegon II's dragon, had been wounded in that clash and could not fly. He lingered near the castle, and the men Cole left behind kept him fed on cattle.

Lord Walys Mooton gathered a hundred knights at Maidenpool and marched to Ragged Point, where he was joined by men of House Brune of Brownhollow, House Celtigar, and House Crabb. With that host he fell upon Rook's Rest.

The garrison Criston Cole had left in the castle did not expect the attack, and the Blacks retook the place with little resistance.

With the castle back in their hands, Walys Mooton and his boldest men killed the guards watching over Sunfyre and went after the dragon himself as he lay sleeping, wounded and defenseless.

The beast did not die without a fight: it killed sixty men, Lord Mooton among them, and sent the rest running.

Fifteen days later, Lord Manfryd Mooton arrived at Rook's Rest and found his brother Walys's charred body amid the wreckage of the slaughter.

Of Sunfyre, though, there was no trace. The golden dragon had vanished, and no one could say where he had gone.
