House Fossoway of New Barrel

The branch is born in 209 AC, at the tourney of Ashford, when a trial by combat forces a choice of sides. Raymun Fossoway, knighted by Ser Lyonel Baratheon only minutes before the fight, chooses to stand with his friend Ser Duncan the Tall, against his own cousin, Ser Steffon Fossoway, the Knight of Cider.

So no one would mistake one for the other, Raymun has the apple on his shield painted green. Steffon always joked that he was still green; Raymun answers that he'd rather be green than rotten, and that answer is what names his whole line afterward.

Whether the branch thrived right after the tourney isn't known, but a century on its strength already matches the parent house at Cider Hall. Like the red apples, they trace their line back to Foss the Archer, one of the sons of Garth Greenhand.

By the time war breaks out, one of the house's sons already wears the black of the Night's Watch: Ser Arnell, born to a Fossoway of the green apple whose name hasn't come down to us. The rest of the house splits between the armies fighting over the throne.

Catelyn Tully sees their banners under the walls of Bitterbridge, in Renly Baratheon's camp, and dines seated next to Ser Jon Fossoway. When Renly dies, both the green and red apples go over to Stannis; at the parley before Storm's End, Ser Cortnay Penrose counts Ser Jon and Ser Bryan Fossoway, one from each branch, among his men.

The green banner rides in Stannis's vanguard toward King's Landing. At the Battle of the Blackwater, Lothor Brune cuts through fifty of their men-at-arms to take Ser Jon prisoner and kill Ser Bryan and Ser Edwyd of the red apple, earning himself the nickname Apple-eater. Jon ends up among the highborn prisoners who kneel before King Joffrey.

At Joffrey's royal wedding, Tyrion Lannister notices a Fossoway and his pregnant wife among the guests: he kisses her and strokes her belly more than once during the feast.

Lady Janna Tyrell, married to Ser Jon Fossoway, is one of Queen Margaery's companions at court in King's Landing, and goes hawking with her and Meredyth Crane.

Later, Brienne of Tarth finds a green apple badge among the tokens gathered from the dead after the battle of Duskendale.
