Viserys Targaryen

Not to be confused with Viserys Targaryen.

Viserys Targaryen was a prince of House Targaryen, the third child of King Aenys I Targaryen and Queen Alyssa Velaryon, born in the year 29 after the Conquest. He was the couple's second son and held the title Prince of the Seven Kingdoms.

In time he became squire to his uncle, King Maegor I Targaryen, and was recognized as his heir while the rest of his family remained at Dragonstone.

Chapter 1

The day the Conqueror died

37 ACBooks only

In the year 37, Viserys was eight years old when he joined his older brother Aegon to listen to their grandfather's war stories. King Aegon I Targaryen suffered a heart attack partway through the telling and died on the spot, in front of both boys.

Chapter 2

The crown that did not go to his brother

41–42 ACBooks only

In the year 41 the royal family withdrew to Dragonstone to escape the unrest gripping the realm, as the Poor Fellows and the High Septon had risen against the crown. Viserys settled on the island with his parents and his younger siblings.

The following year he attended his father's funeral there, alongside his mother and his young siblings Jaehaerys and Alysanne. The crown that should have passed to his older brother Aegon never reached him: their uncle Maegor, Aenys's younger brother, took it and proclaimed himself king.

Chapter 3

Tyanna's nine days

44 ACBooks only

While his mother and siblings remained at Dragonstone, Viserys was living in King's Landing as Maegor I's squire and heir. When the dowager queen Visenya Targaryen died in the year 44, Alyssa used the confusion on the island to flee with her children, taking with her Dark Sister, Visenya's Valyrian steel sword.

His mother's escape fell on Viserys, still within his uncle's reach in the capital. Queen Tyanna of Pentos questioned and tortured him for nine days. Asked whether to stop the punishment, Maegor settled the matter: "Then let him die. Perhaps that will bring the bitch out for the funeral." The prince did not survive.

Maegor left his nephew's body on display in the castle yard for nearly two weeks, waiting for Alyssa to come claim it. She never did, and the king eventually gave the remains to the fire. Lords and commonfolk alike mourned the prince's death.
