Peremore Hightower

Peremore Hightower, called the Deformed, was the second son of King Uthor of the Hightower, lord of Oldtown, and brother to King Urrigon Hightower. His frail, twisted body kept him confined to bed for most of his life, but his curiosity about the world drew maesters, septons, healers, mages, and alchemists to his side. That circle of scholars would become the seed of the Citadel.

Chapter 1

A broken body, a restless mind

Books only

Peremore was born with one arm that never grew and a back bent out of shape, a condition that left him sick and bedridden for nearly all his life. While other princes grew up among swords and horses, he spent his days watching the world through his window, wondering about everything that happened beyond the walls of Oldtown.

To fill that confinement he gathered maesters, septons, healers, and singers around him, along with mages, alchemists, and sorcerers. He did not want them for company but for what they knew: his greatest pleasure was listening to them argue among themselves, each defending his craft against the rest.

Chapter 2

A sick man's legacy

Books only

Peremore died young, having barely left his chamber. His brother, King Urrigon Hightower, succeeded him on the throne and chose to honor the circle of scholars who had kept the prince company to the end.

Urrigon granted those men a plot of land in Oldtown. They settled there, and in time that settlement grew into the Citadel, the seat of the maesters of Westeros.
