Runcel Hightower

Runcel Hightower was Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, a position he reached coming from House Hightower of Oldtown.

He is remembered for one of the gravest crises the order has ever faced: an attempt to turn Castle Black to his own ends that put the Watch's very existence at risk.

A legacy for a bastard

As Lord Commander, Runcel held command over Castle Black and the whole of the Night's Watch. His name, belonging to one of the great houses of Westeros, did not stop him from turning against the oath he had sworn on taking the black.

Runcel sought to seize the entire Watch and pass it down as an inheritance to a son born out of wedlock. The scheme brought the order to the brink of ruin before it failed.
