Garmund Hightower

Garmund was born the third of Lord Ormund Hightower's sons by his first wife. He had two brothers, Lyonel and Martyn, and a sister, Bethany.

By around 131 AC he was living as a ward at Highgarden, where he served as companion to the young Lord Tyrell and cupbearer to his mother.

By the time the Dance of the Dragons ended, Lord Ormund had died fighting for Aegon II Targaryen at Bitterbridge, and the new head of the house was his brother Lyonel. When ravens arrived offering peace to those who swore fealty to the new king, Aegon III, Lyonel first refused in fury, though he eventually bent the knee.

Two accounts survive of why he gave in. The fool Mushroom claims that Lady Samantha Tarly, Lord Ormund's widow, fell under Lyonel's spell and was the one who proposed their marriage. Grand Maester Munkun, in his True Telling, tells it differently: that the Tyrells forbade Lyonel from raising troops or going to war without their leave, and that if he disobeyed, it would be his brother Garmund who paid with his life.

Garmund married Lady Rhaena Targaryen, half-sister of King Aegon III Targaryen, becoming her second husband. Together they had six daughters.
