Shirei came into the world in 293, the second daughter Lord Walder Frey had with Annara Farring, his seventh wife. Among the Freys themselves she is counted as the seventh daughter of the house, though that ranking shifts depending on who is doing the telling.

The rumor was set going by Merrett Frey: according to him, Annara had an affair with Walder Frey the Black, casting suspicion on the true fatherhood of her children with Lord Walder. No one in the record settles the matter; it remains one more rumor circulating through the Twins about the lord's vast brood.

At seven years old, Shirei was among the Frey women seen at the Twins when Robb Stark arrived at the castle for Edmure Tully's wedding. It is the only moment of her life the saga records her present for, one more figure among the many kinsmen filling the hall.
