Hosteen Frey

Hosteen is one of Walder Frey's many offspring, the first born to his third wife, Amarei Crakehall. Thickset and heavy-jawed, he built an early reputation as a brute: slow to anger, but savage once provoked. That temper earned him the nickname that sticks to him, Ser Stupid.

His jousting career started with more shame than glory. At the Lannisport tourney, held after the crushing of the Greyjoy Rebellion, he lost to Jorah Mormont, who would go on to win it all. Years later he rode to King's Landing for the Tourney of the Hand alongside several of his brothers, Martyn Rivers among them, and there Loras Tyrell knocked him from his horse.

When Catelyn Stark rode to the Twins to secure Walder Frey's support for her son Robb's cause, Hosteen stood among his kin. Soon after he marched off with the Stark army.

At the Battle of the Green Fork he was taken prisoner by House Lannister. Lord Tywin held him alongside his brothers Jared and Danwell, and alongside Ronel Rivers as well, locked away in the Tower of Fear while the war went on without them.

Freed by then, Hosteen turns up at Harrenhal when Jaime Lannister arrives there as a captive of the Brave Companions. Shortly after he escorts Catelyn Tully to the Twins, on the eve of her brother Edmure's wedding to one of Walder Frey's daughters.

That wedding ends in slaughter. During the Red Wedding, Hosteen kills Lucas Blackwood with his own hands.

With the war already decided, Lord Bolton sends two hundred men from the Twins to secure the North; Hosteen shares command of that force with Aenys Frey.

He also attends Ramsay Bolton's wedding to the girl everyone calls Arya Stark, where the northern cold costs him an ear, frozen beyond saving.

When Little Walder Frey turns up dead, Hosteen accuses Wyman Manderly of the killing. Manderly denies it loudly and insults House Frey in the same breath; Hosteen, beside himself, throws himself at him and very nearly beats him to death, until Manderly's own knights manage to pull them apart.
