Brandon Stark was the second son born to Bennard Stark and Margaret Karstark, brother to Benjen and Elric. He belonged to the branch of House Stark that governed the North on behalf of young Lord Cregan Stark during his minority.
His place within that family put him at the heart of the struggle his father waged with Cregan once his cousin came of age, a conflict that would shape the rest of his life.

The North Bennard would not release
124–126 ACBooks only
Bennard Stark had ruled the North throughout the years his nephew Cregan remained underage, and Brandon grew up as one of that regent's sons. When Cregan turned sixteen in 124 AC and came of age, Bennard was slow to hand over power, and the bond between uncle and nephew kept souring.
Matters came to a head in 126 AC, when Cregan rose against his uncle and seized rule of the North by force. Bennard was thrown into confinement along with his three sons, Brandon among them, ending whatever part he had held in governing the region.
