Rhaenys Targaryen
Not to be confused with Rhaenys Targaryen (The Princess and the Queen) · Rhaenys Targaryen.
Rhaenys Targaryen was the first child of Prince Rhaegar Targaryen and Princess Elia Martell, born at Dragonstone in 280 AC. She held the title Princess of the Seven Kingdoms and had a younger brother, Aegon.
She spent her early years between Dragonstone and the Red Keep, in the court of her grandfather, King Aerys II Targaryen.
Chapter 1
The girl who "smelled of Dorne"
280 ACBooks only
Rhaenys was born at Dragonstone in 280 AC, shortly after her parents settled there following their marriage. When Rhaegar returned to the Red Keep to present her to his parents, Queen Rhaella welcomed the baby warmly.
King Aerys II, by contrast, refused to touch or hold her, complaining that the girl "smelled of Dorne", after Elia Martell's blood. As a small child, Rhaenys also kept a black kitten she named Balerion, after Aegon the Conqueror's great dragon.
Chapter 2
Under her father's bed
283 ACBooks only
During the sack of King's Landing, in 283 AC, Rhaenys hid in terror beneath her father's bed, wearing nothing but her sleeping clothes. Ser Amory Lorch found her there, dragged her out, and stabbed her dozens of times until she died.
Tywin Lannister had ordered the deaths of Rhaenys and her brother Aegon to prove his loyalty to Robert Baratheon. The bodies of both children were presented to Robert wrapped in a red Lannister cloak, so the blood would show less.
Tywin later criticized how Lorch had killed her: with a bit of sense, he said, the man would have smothered her instead of stabbing her.
