Gerold III Lannister
Gerold III Lannister was Lord of Casterly Rock and King of the Rock in the years before the War of Conquest, head of House Lannister in a period from which little detail survives.
His reign is remembered chiefly for how it ended: with no sons of his own, the crown passed to a warrior from outside the house who married his only daughter.

King of the Rock

Before Aegon the Conqueror ever landed in Westeros, Gerold III held the seat of Casterly Rock as head of House Lannister, bearing the titles of Lord of Casterly Rock and King of the Rock.
Little else survives about his rule — not the wars he may have fought, not how long he sat the throne of the Rock.
Chapter 2
The Andal son-in-law
Books only
Gerold III had a single daughter, and it was to her that he gave in marriage Ser Joffrey Lydden, an Andal warrior who had come to the westerlands. The match joined the princess of the Rock to a man with no blood tie to the house.
When Gerold III died leaving no sons, a council chose to crown his daughter's husband rather than search out heirs elsewhere. Ser Joffrey took the Lannister name upon his coronation, the first man of Andal blood to rule from Casterly Rock.
