Rohanne Webber

Rohanne was born the daughter of Wyman Webber, Lord of Fosafría, and as a girl grew fond of a squire in her father's household, Addam Osgrey, whom Wyman turned away as a suitor. Instead he married her at ten to his own squire, a boy of twelve. That husband died at the Battle of Prado Hierbarroja, and it was not him Rohanne mourned, but Addam.

At thirteen, Wyman married her off again, this time to a man of fifty-five who soon died of a chill. Months later she bore a son from that marriage, so weak he lived less than a week. A third husband, Simon Staunton, choked on a chicken bone; a fourth, Rolland Uffering, fell to the Great Spring Sickness. By one of these last two she also had a daughter who did not live to see her first year.

Her father, old by then, tried to marry her off once more, to his own castellan, Ser Lucas Inchfield, and she refused. His will gave her two years to remarry after his death, or Fosafría would pass to a cousin, Ser Wendell Webber. Word spread among the lords of the Reach that four husbands had not lasted her, and suitors grew scarce as a result. Among the few who persisted were Cleyton Caswell and Simon Leygood, and also Ser Gerold Lannister, who wrote to her from Casterly Rock, though she doubted he would trade the Westerlands for Fosafría.

As Lady of Fosafría, under the reign of Aerys I Targaryen, Rohanne carried the reputation of a witch and poisoner who had done away with her own husbands and children; she accepted the nickname Red Widow herself, since the fear it bred suited her. In 209, a smallfolk man named Dake was accused of stealing sheep from the Webbers; after two unanswered complaints to Ser Eustace Osgrey, she had her knights drown him in her castle's moat, sewn into a sack. "I cannot go back to Fosafría with empty hands," she said then. "They will say the Scarlet Widow no longer stings, that she has grown too weak to do justice, that she failed to protect the smallfolk… You do not understand, ser."

The episode enraged Eustace Osgrey, who joined those already speaking against her, and it crossed paths with other open quarrels: Lord Stackhouse coveted the Webbers' Horseshoe Hills, Ser Clifford Conklyn laid claim to Lago Frondoso, and House Durwell rustled cattle. Her own castellan, Ser Lucas Inchfield, threatened to fight anyone who came near to court her, and drove off suitors in the process. Rohanne, meanwhile, kept up the Webber grainfields and orchards, bred five hundred black-nosed sheep, and raised horses said to be the finest in the Reach.

In 211, the second year of a drought, she had a dam built on the Jaquel river to water her lands and refill Fosafría's moat, cutting off the water that reached the Osgrey lands. One of Eustace's men, Ser Bennis of the Brown Shield, attacked one of Rohanne's men on seeing the works, and Eustace sent another of his sworn swords, Ser Duncan the Tall, to pay blood money and ask that the dam be torn down. Rohanne refused both, showing him a document sealed by the crown proving the Jaquel was hers by right — and revealing, besides, that Eustace had once sided with the Blackfyres.

The quarrel worsened when Coldwood burned and Eustace blamed Rohanne's people for it; she denied it and demanded an apology. Since neither would accept Lord Rowan as judge, they settled the matter by combat: Ser Duncan for Eustace, Ser Lucas Inchfield for Rohanne, who further demanded she marry him if he won. Duncan killed Lucas in the Jaquel and nearly drowned himself in the process, but Maester Cerrick revived him. His courage was enough to reconcile the two sides: Rohanne finally visited Addam's grave at Tiesa, and that same night, talking with Eustace about their families, they agreed to marry the next day.

She was described as a small woman, five feet tall, with an upturned nose, freckles, and a red braid so long it brushed her thighs; she sometimes wore men's clothes. Duncan, who had felt something for her during the dispute, learned that Rohanne had married Eustace without once visiting him while he recovered from his wounds. She offered him a place as captain of her guard, then a mare named Flame; he refused both. They kissed before he rode out, and Duncan cut off her braid to keep as a token of her.

It is not known when Eustace Osgrey died, though it was before 219, the year by which Rohanne had already married Ser Gerold Lannister — whether before or after he became Lord of Casterly Rock is not recorded. With Gerold she had four children: the twins Tywald and Tion, Tytos, born in 220, and Jason, born in 229.

Rohanne vanished under circumstances that were never explained, in the year 230, less than a year after giving birth to Jason. Through Tytos she became the paternal grandmother of Tywin Lannister, and so the great-grandmother of Jaime, Cersei, and Tyrion.
