House Bettley

Casa Bettley

House Bettley is one of the many vassal houses serving the Lannisters of Casterly Rock, the great lords of the Westerlands. Its blazon, three blue beetles on a gold field, shows up only in passing throughout the story, one more banner among the western host.

No source names its seat or its founder. What little is known of the house comes from what others happen to notice —its standard in an army, its colours on a soldier's coat— and that is enough to place it among the families propping up Casterly Rock's power without ever stepping into the center of the tale.

Chapter 1

The beetle that marches from Harrenhal

After his time at Harrenhal, Lord Tywin Lannister musters his army and rides out of the castle at the head of the western host.

Arya Stark, still a prisoner, watches the column pass and picks out the House Bettley banner among the standards: three blue beetles on gold, one more minor blazon following the Lannisters.

Chapter 2

The beetle in the procession and the garrison

When Lord Tywin Lannister's body is carried back to Casterly Rock, the funeral procession gathers the banners of the western lords and knights who owed him fealty. Among them, the blue beetle of House Bettley appears again.

Around the same time, Brienne of Tarth arrives at Maidenpool and notices, beneath the town's portcullis, a soldier under Lord Randyll Tarly's command wearing a badge with a blue beetle — a sign that Bettley men serve in that garrison too.
