Lancel IV Lannister

Lancel IV Lannister was King of the Rock and, as head of House Lannister, Lord of Casterly Rock. He is remembered above all for a single stroke of the sword: wielding Roar, his house's Valyrian steel blade, he struck off an enemy king's head and his heir's in one blow.

That same ambition later drove him to try to seize land from the Reach, while its king was occupied fighting another war.

Chapter 1

The stroke of Roar

Books only

At the Battle of Lann's Point, Lancel fought King Harrald Medioahogado. With Roar, the Valyrian steel sword his house had kept for generations, he is said to have struck off both Harrald's head and his heir's in a single blow.

Chapter 2

The war for the Reach

Books only

While King Gyles III Gardener was fighting the Storm King in the east, Lancel saw a chance to claim part of the Reach for himself and launched his own attack. Ser Wilbert Osgrey, as told by his descendant Ser Eustace Osgrey, met him during that campaign.

Maester Yandel argues that Lancel's move forced Gyles III to abandon his own war and return home to defend his lands from the Lannister king's men. In his view, had it not been for that attack, Gyles III might have completed his victory over the Storm Lands.

Chapter 3

The death of a king

Books only

The sources disagree on how Lancel died. Ser Eustace Osgrey claims his ancestor Wilbert killed him in battle, after Lancel had already dealt him a mortal wound with Roar. Other accounts instead place his death at the Red Lake.
