Lelia Lannister

Lelia Lannister was a daughter of the King of the Rock and, by marriage, Queen of the Iron Islands. Her wedding to Harmund II Hoare, known as the Merchant, put a Lannister on the throne of Pyke, where the ironborn came to call her the fairest flower of the west.

The children born of that marriage would later rule the islands themselves, raised away from the worship of the Drowned God that held sway there. Her story is bound to theirs, and to the pull between two very different ideas of what an iron king should be.

Chapter 1

The fairest flower of the west

Books only

Harmund Hoare spent his youth away from the islands as a ward of the Lannisters at Casterly Rock, and those years shaped a king more inclined to trade than to the axe, the one they would later call the Merchant.

Once crowned, he took Lelia, daughter of the King of the Rock, as his wife. Their children were raised in the Faith of the Seven, their mother's religion, rather than in the worship of the Drowned God that ruled the islands their father governed.

Chapter 2

The throne that would not reave

Books only

Lelia's eldest son inherited the crown as Harmund III Hoare, and ruled by turning his back on what many ironborn saw as their birthright: reaving, salt wives, and slavery.

The backlash organized quickly. A drowned man called the Shrike raised a rebellion that succeeded fast, deposing Harmund III and crowning his younger brother, Hagon Hoare, in his place, a king determined to restore the Old Way to the islands.

Chapter 3

The longship of punishment

Books only

Harmund III and his mother, the dowager queen Lelia, paid for ruling with their backs turned on the Drowned God: their lips, ears, eyelids, and tongues were torn away. Lelia was then sent back to Casterly Rock aboard a longship.

Her nephew, then King of the Rock, answered the news by declaring war on the ironborn.

The fighting dragged on for seven years, until Ser Aubrey Crakehall defeated Hagon the Merciless. Before he was hanged, Hagon suffered the same mutilations he had ordered inflicted on Lelia.
