Maris Baratheon

Maris Baratheon was the second daughter of Lord Borros Baratheon and Lady Elenda Caron, rulers of Storm's End, and one of the four sisters known as the Four Storms.

When the Dance of the Dragons brought rival princes to her family's door, a single remark she made to Prince Aemond Targaryen was enough to bend the course of what followed.

Chapter 1

One of the Four Storms

Books only

In this chapterBorros Baratheon

Maris was born at Storm's End, the second child of Lord Borros Baratheon and Lady Elenda Caron. Her elder sister Cassandra came before her, and three younger siblings followed: Floris, Ellyn, and Royce.

Of the four sisters, nicknamed the Four Storms, Maris was said to be the sharpest-witted, though also the one least favored when it came to looks.

Chapter 2

The taunt that unleashed the storm

129 ACBooks only

In 129 AC, as the Dance of the Dragons broke out, both factions came knocking at Storm's End seeking Lord Borros's loyalty. Prince Aemond Targaryen arrived first, sent by the Greens to seal a marriage with one of the Four Storms; the bride chosen was not Maris. Prince Lucerys Velaryon came next, pleading his mother's cause, and Lord Borros refused him support, though he would not allow the two boys to come to blows under his roof.

Lucerys left without incident, but Maris would not let the moment pass: she turned on Prince Aemond with a barbed remark about the eye he had lost, telling him she was glad her sister had been the one chosen, since she wanted a husband with all his parts intact. The taunt struck home. Aemond mounted Vhagar and gave chase, catching Lucerys and his dragon Arrax over the Bay of Wrecks.

The jester Mushroom later claimed Aemond tore out Lucerys's eyes and brought them to Maris on a bed of seaweed; Grand Maester Munkun, in his True Telling, rejects the tale.

Chapter 3

The veil of the Silent Sisters

131 ACBooks only

Septon Eustace records that by 131 AC, Maris had taken the vows of the Silent Sisters. Mushroom claimed she did so only after her own mother had her tongue cut out, though Archmaester Gyldayn gives no credit to that detail.
