Shireen Baratheon

Shireen was born at Dragonstone in 289 AC, the only child of Stannis Baratheon and Selyse Florent. As a baby she nearly died of greyscale, an illness that left half her left cheek and much of her neck covered in dead grey and black skin.

She grew up in her father's castle under the tutelage of Maester Cressen, with the fool Patchface as her constant companion — she calls him simply Spots. Sweet-natured but sad, she has suffered from nightmares for years that she does not easily share.

At Dragonstone, Cressen sees a girl who always seems sad. Shireen tells him she dreams of dragons coming to devour her; the maester tries to reassure her that the castle's stone statues cannot come alive, though she isn't entirely convinced — Melisandre has called the red comet "dragon's breath," and that outweighs any explanation.

Cressen even suggests to Stannis that Shireen be betrothed to Lord Robert Arryn and sent to the Eyrie, hoping to secure an alliance with Lysa Arryn after Jon Arryn's death; Stannis remains unsure. Meanwhile, Tyrion Lannister's small council discusses using Shireen's parentage as a weapon: between Tyrion's idea of having Axell Florent claim to be her father and Petyr Baelish's suggestion of blaming Patchface, the latter prevails, a lie Cersei backs eagerly and Varys helps carry through the taverns.

The rumor reaches Storm's End, where Renly brings it up in front of Stannis during their meeting, and the insult lands on his brother in front of everyone.

In her cousin Edric Storm, Robert Baratheon's bastard son, Shireen finds someone to play and laugh with; Davos Seaworth notices she is far happier when he's around. The two, along with Devan Seaworth, take lessons from Maester Pylos.

Lord Alester Florent, seeking peace between Stannis and King Joffrey, goes so far as to propose betrothing Shireen to Prince Tommen; the negotiation, done without Stannis's approval, costs him his freedom.

When Stannis sets out for the Wall, he takes Shireen with him and leaves her at Eastwatch-by-the-Sea in her mother's care.

While Stannis marches his army toward Castle Black, Shireen stays behind at Eastwatch-by-the-Sea. Soon after, she, her mother, and Patchface are brought to Castle Black as well, where the girl is fascinated by the giant roaming the Night's Watch castle.

At Alys Karstark's wedding to Sigorn, Shireen dances with Ser Brus Buckler during the feast.

Among the queen's men, Val of the Free Folk fears her because of the greyscale scars, telling Jon Snow the girl is "not clean" and should be killed, and refusing to let Gilly's baby sleep near "the dead girl." Jon is horrified, relieved only that Selyse never heard it.

In the television series' timeline, Shireen's story takes a different path from the novels: available sources record her as dead by 302 AC, while in George R. R. Martin's books she remains alive. It stands as one of the clearest divergences between the two versions of the Baratheon of Dragonstone's story.

The material at hand does not specify how or under what circumstances this happens, and the novels have not yet reached that point in the story.
