Steffon Baratheon

Not to be confused with Steffon Baratheon (son of Serac).

Steffon Baratheon was Lord of Storm's End and head of House Baratheon in the decades before Robert's Rebellion. Raised at the court of King Aegon V Targaryen, he became friends as a boy with two men who would go on to shape the realm: Prince Aerys Targaryen and a young Tywin Lannister.

With his wife, Cassana Estermont, he had three sons who would come to walk very different paths in the history of Westeros: Robert, Stannis, and Renly.

Chapter 1

The page of King's Landing

246–260 ACBooks only

Steffon was born in 246 AC at Storm's End, the firstborn son of Lord Ormund Baratheon and Princess Rhaelle Targaryen. He spent part of his childhood at the court of his grandfather, King Aegon V Targaryen, serving as a page in King's Landing. There he forged a close friendship with his cousin, Prince Aerys Targaryen, and with a boy named Tywin Lannister.

Grown, he rode as a squire with the forces that fought in the War of the Ninepenny Kings. That war cost his father his life: Lord Ormund fell to Maelys I Blackfyre in 260 AC and died in Steffon's own arms, who inherited the title of Lord Paramount of the Stormlands that same day.

Now head of the house, Steffon married Cassana Estermont, with whom he had three sons: Robert, Stannis, and Renly. At some point he sent Robert, his firstborn and heir, to the Eyrie, to be fostered by his old comrade-in-arms Jon Arryn.

As Lord Paramount of the Stormlands, he also took part in the tourneys of his day. In one held at his own castle he was defeated by Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, son of his childhood friend Aerys.

Chapter 3

The embassy to the Free Cities

277–278 ACBooks only

In this chapterAerys II Targaryen

Around 277 AC, King Aerys II Targaryen summoned Lord Steffon to King's Landing to sit on the small council. The following year he sent him, together with Cassana, to the Free Cities in search of a worthy bride for his son Rhaegar. The mission bore no fruit, but in one of his letters Steffon wrote that they had found an extraordinary fool named Patchface, one so amusing, in his own words, that he would teach Stannis how to laugh.

On the voyage home, the Windproud, the ship carrying the lord and lady of Storm's End, ran into a storm off the coast. Robert and Stannis watched it all from the castle towers: the ship was driven onto the rocks and sank with hundreds of men aboard. Cassana and Steffon drowned; the only survivor was Patchface.
